The K-Cup Challenge: Green Mountain Dark Magic Decaf (Extra Bold)
It took a few months, but we’ve finally arrived at the last K-Cup Challenge review for initial batch of samples my friends at Green Mountain Coffee. I expect this one will move quickly, not because I don’t have a lot to say about Dark Magic Decaf, but mostly because there’s not a whole lot I can add to my review of the “regular” variety of Dark Magic.
The Description
Dark Magic® Decaf Extra Bold is a delicious decaf crafted for sweet and intense espresso. Excellent as a drip coffee too!
The Aroma
Just like the regular, the decaf variety of Dark Magic is smokey with hints of chocolate, although I don’t find it as caramely.
Drinking it Black
Maybe it gets lost in the decaffeination process, maybe I’m just grown accustomed to it, but regardless, I don’t find the decaf as peppery as the regular Dark Magic. It’s still a heavy-bodied coffee, with great tasting chocolate notes, and a complexity largely absent from the majority of dark roast blends.
I grown to love drinking the regular variety black, and the same holds true of the decaf. Several dozen K-Cups later, Dark Magic is still one of my favorites.
With Cream and Sugar
The more coffee I drink, the more I’m liking it black. The beauty of Dark Magic is that it’s as good with cream and sugar as it is black. Unlike many coffees which lose some of their subtle flavors when cream and sugar are added, Dark Magic instead transforms itself into a delicious light and sweet with an almost dessert-like quality. This is especially beneficial in the decaf variety as it makes Dark Magic Decaf the perfect after dinner coffee for dark roast lovers.
Final Thoughts
I love Green Mountain Dark Magic, so it should come as no surprise that I love the decaf variety as well. I’m not alone either. Dark Magic is one of the most popular varieties in my office. Dark Magic is what I serve to my house guests who request decaf. While it may not be a scientific survey, I can tell you that 100% of doctors who’ve tried Dark Magic Decaf in my house really like it. Granted, it was only 1 doctor, but 100% is 100%. Incidentally, the same holds true for Yale Forestry students as well.
Clearly, everyone loves Dark Magic Decaf and I’m betting that you will too.

In my efforts to cut back on caffeine, I have tried a lot of decaf varieties. This one stands out as the absolute best. This is an extraordinary coffee. As Tony mentions, while it may not have the exact bite of the regular, this is still an exemplary decaf, which would fool many into thinking they’re drinking regular. It is sophisticated and robust. Tony, I do taste the caramel undertones.
This is the first k-cup that I can make a full 10oz cup of, and it still has its full flavor. It actually is a bit stronger than I usually take it. Having said that, it is my absolute favorite k-cup I have tried. A+
